Dipping into Laura Taxel's book is like putting on a pair of magic glasses. Before, Northeast Ohio is meatloaf and peas. After, it's a colorful melting pot of Jamaican jerk wings and Hungarian stuffed cabbage, of reggae in the back room and curried goat in the kitchen . . . Cleveland Ethnic Eats is more than just a guide to ethnic grocery stores, carryouts and restaurants. It's a glimpse of the people and cultures that season life in Northeast Ohio. Akron Beacon Journal
The best guidebook to the ethnic cultures of Greater Cleveland - the only guidebook, really - has been updated to reflect a changing city. Follow the food and you will discover the culture. . . Taxel scouts restaurants, trattorias, markets and cafes in the region's ethnic communities, soaks in the ambience and often interviews the Old World owners. Then she compiles what she has learned into a one-of-a-kind guide. The Plain Dealer
Without question, this book is an indispensable and exhaustive catalog of Cleveland's bountiful ethnic food culture. Consider it an ethnic restaurant-only version of the Yellow Pages, only more descriptive and detailed . . . Adventurous cooks will make the most of Taxel's listing of ethnic markets, which are often shopped exclusively by immigrants in the know, and are crucial resources for hard-to-find ingredients. This lively and wide-ranging book is a welcome guide to ethnic restaurants and markets in the Cleveland area. With tips on how to find anything from Asian basil to zucchini kugel, it could be as useful to serious cooks as serious eaters. The Plain Dealer
Can't afford a trip to Italy or China? Yes, you can. At least a culinary one. In the eighth edition of her exhaustive guide to area restaurants, author Laura Taxel takes Clevelanders on an edible tour of all the ethnic delights Cleveland has to offer, from Cuban and Salvadoran to Thai and Vietnamese, Italian, Jewish, British, French, Brazilian, Ethiopian and much more. Bon voyage -- and bon appetit! The Plain Dealer
Taxel does her homework and research. She drives and samples. She asks friends, neighbors and new acquaintances for their favorite ethnic places. She checks out suggestions and interviews owners. I'm keeping my Cleveland Ethnic Eats book handy because I plan to return and seek those wonderful ethnic eateries. The prices are right for my kind of food: real, not gussied up, and so satisfying. A very handy tool for food lovers all over the region . . . From Hungarian to Slovenian, from Cambodian to Ethiopian, the basic information is right there in that ever-growing book . . . A wonderful compendium of food information for Northern Ohio. Currents
A guide so comprehensive it should be a requisite for anybody living in, visiting, or traveling through the Rock 'n' Roll Capital of the World . . . Taxel overlooks no detail in her write-ups, from menu items and specialities to prices, hours, ambiance, attire, and parking . . . But what really makes the book a must-read (besides now knowing useful trivia like where to get Pad Thai in Parma) is Taxel's ability to introduce the reader to each business. She shares personal stories, unique experiences and menu items, and the history of each entry, creating a sense of familiarity with them that makes any other guidebook seem . . . well, misguided. Covers all the basics and then some . . . exceptionally easy to use and puts all pertinent information right at your fingertips. Medina County Gazette
